I Kind of Hate Myself

Why the hell did I just read like 100,000 words of Evil!Jim Doesn't Understand Poor!Blair? If I wanted to remind myself why I'm not in The Sentinel fandom anymore, I'm sure I could have found a less time consuming way to do it.

I've mentioned it before I think, but there really needs to be fic in which an evil bay guy cable cabal gets a hold of Steve and put him up for auction to the highest evil bad guy bidder. Then Tony sends in someone awesome like Deadpool as a proxy and spends like a trillion dollars on Steve. Then there's awkwardness and angst and cuddling. I don't understand why this does not exist.

Here's a Wordle of my big bang, which I hope to be able to link to any day now.

Warnings, and the Wank Surrounding Them

If you don't know what's going on there's a summary here. And I really like this discussion of derailing and privilege here.

I usually do not comment on massive fandom issues. In most cases (as in this one), so many people have said what I want to say, and said it better, well before I even know the discussion is happening.

However, here's a few points I want to make:

When I was at a showing of the Vagina Monologues a couple of years back, there was some sort of solidarity thing wherein people who wanted to identify as assault survivors or people who know survivors could raise their hands. The point was to show how horrifically prevalent sexual violence against women is. The problem was that some people didn't put up their hands.

Everyone knows someone who has been abused or sexually assaulted or both. Everyone. Even if you don't think you do. If you know more than three women, you do. If you don't know more than three women, there's still a pretty good chance that you do.

Does everyone have triggers? Of course not, but in a community of women (which the fic-writing portion of fandom essentially is), there is a huge potential that someone you know does.

Not everyone wants to talk about them. Not everyone feels that they can. I know people who are pretty open, and people who are only talk about personal pain in severely filtered posts. I probably know people who don't talk about them at all.

I'm saying all this because, clearly, the idea that some people that hypothetically exists being hurt by lack of warnings isn't hitting home that well (if you're concerned about spoilers, marking them is super easy. Here is a great post about how to warn and preserve "artistic integrity"). That really sucks. The world is difficult enough for women without us being us glaringly inconsiderate to each other in our own space.

It just makes it that much more awful that women are doing this to each other. Women are hurting their friends. And when they're called on it, some are claiming that art is more important to them than other human beings.

I find the idea that other women might blame the victim, as has been happening, sickening.

I find the idea that other women people a trivialising trauma, as has been happening, sickening.

It's interactions like this that makes me hate people.

I'm calling an amnesty of changes regarding your circle/flist regarding this.

I'm not closing comments, but I am warning you that I may not be capable of having a rational discussion on this point.

The Doctor Voodoo: Avenger of the Supernatural mini looks kind of cool too.

Why does the Spider-Woman series keep getting pushed back?

I kind of want to read Luke Cage Noir, but it looks they're fridging an awful lot of women in it.

Well, That Was Unproductive

This icon isn't actually related to anything, but I think it's cute (GIP?)

I think I'm just going to give up on meme games, as I seem incapable of actually doing them, or answering prompts, basically ever. Or, for that matter, answering comments, though I totally intend to.

I'm trying to write a fight scene, but I'm pretty much stuck and am more or less pounding through it on Write or Die 2.0. I think it will be okay in the end. I just can't seem to plot fights in advance, so I have no idea how it's going to end, or what's going to happen, other than a few vague images. I'd probably be rubbish at writing comics.

So then I did a bunch of random reading for the sake of characterisation, and found out such interesting facts as Steven Rogers doesn't have a middle name, and Paul Cornell probably likes the Roger Stern/John Byrne run of Captain America best because it has vampires in it. Oh, and Rhodey would give up his own boots to save Tony from having hurt feet. I didn't learn that Jan Van Dyne is made of awesome. I already knew that.

Other than fixing the middle name issue, I haven't touched my big bang in weeks. I really need to do that.

It's Possible This Fic Will Be the Death of Me

I just watched four hours of documentary on the history of New York City. There's like sixteen hours in total, but I only bothered with the ones that covered 1919 to 1941. I have also acquired a geographically based history of Manhattan (which I've finally learned to spell) from the library.

On the bright side, some random-ass guess I made in the first place turned out to be true and I didn't screw up anything to massively. Also, I have decided that Steve Rogers has the same accent as Mayor Alfred Smith.

Marvel Comics

So the solicits for August are out and with Captain Britain and MI:13 cancelled, Avengers/Invaders and New Avengers: The Reunion minis concluded, and Captain America skipping a month, my pull list kind of disappeared there. Oh well, there's always New Avengers and Young Avengers, and whatever the hell Reborn is (probably a silly tease, but I'll probably read it anyway).

There do seem to be some interesting things, however. I'm probably still not buying Marvel Divas, but at least their getting better at cover art. This one actually looks like something I might want to read.

Invincible Iron Man, which I'm kind of waiting for the trade on promises to have Black Widow and Captain America, which is chipping away at my resolve. A lot.

And then there's this. Marvel Bromance Trade Paperback #1. I... um... am I hallucinating, or is Marvel publishing slash zines now? Wow. I believe my icon (DW only) sums this up.

So, I'm Appreciating the Nice Things...

Preview of Captain America #49, in which Sharon Carter wears shorts and a t-shirt to bed and wanders about the house in a large dressing gown and flip flops. Also, they haven't forgotten that Sam Wilson exists. Nice to have Sharon back in the story. I've always been very fond.

Dear Marvel,

Fuck off and die,

No love,

This was inspired by the interview with Marvel Comics Editor in Chief Joe Quesada found here.

I'll just post the really good bit shall I?

Ted and Lisa
What's going on with female Marvel characters? Jean Grey's been dead for several years now, Shadowcat's basically dead, Ms. Marvel & Wasp are dead, Scarlet Witch and Songbird have been written out, She-Hulk's been replaced, Storm's usage is limited... any comments? Just trying out some fresh faces?

JQ: We’ve got a lot of strong female characters in all our books right now. The X-books always have a lot of strong female characters. Domino, Wolfsbane, X-23, Siryn, Monet, Layla Miller, Mirage, Karma, Magick, Magma, Rogue, Armor, Emma Frost, Pixie, and maybe somebody else coming back into the mix… not all of those characters are household names, but honestly neither are some of the ones you mentioned.
Storm’s only really sidelined if you don’t read ASTONISHING or BLACK PANTHER (who’s also female these days…), which you should!

Also, Elektra is female and she’s got her own limited series! Namora and Venus are right up front in Agents of Atlas, while Mockingbird is kicking butt and taking names in New Avengers: The Reunion.
Then over in Guardians of the Galaxy we’ve Gamora, Martyr and Mantis; Medusa and Crystal going to war in War of Kings; and in the pages of Thunderbolts #133, Songbird will be battling it out with Black Widow II. And if that’s not enough for ya, over in War Machine, we have Cybermancer and Bethany Cabe keeping James Rhodes flying, while the magical Jennifer Kale is a star in Marvel Zombies 4.

So I’d say that the ladies of the Marvel Universe are doing pretty good!

And let’s not forget Sue Storm, Valkyrie, Zarda, Carol Danvers, Kitty Pryde & the newly minted She-Hulk (among others!) tearing it up over in the Ultimate Universe.

This also seems like the perfect time to announce our Marvel Divas limited series, beginning in July, from Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Tonci Zonjic, featuring some of the Marvel Universe’s greatest female heroes in a way you haven’t seem them before.
I’ll let Roberto explain:

“The idea behind the series was to have some sudsy fun and lift the curtain a bit and take a peep at some of our most fabulous super heroines. In the series, they're an unlikely foursome of friends--Black Cat, Hell Cat, Firestar, and Photon--with TWO things in common: They're all leading double-lives and they're all having romantic trouble. The pitch started as "Sex and the City" in the Marvel Universe, and there's definitely that "naughty" element to it, but I also think the series is doing to a deeper place, asking question about what it means...truly means...to be a woman in an industry dominated by testosterone and guns. (And I mean both the super hero industry and the comic book industry.) But mostly it's just a lot of hot fun.”

This is accompanied by this picture. (For bonus fun, check out the cover of Black Panther #5. Clearly Strom remains as strong and inspiration as ever.)

I... really don't know where to start. I think I'll just fall back on "fuck off and die."

Random Note: I would like to note my continuing amusement at the fact that the worst thing Cam Mitchell can think to do to his evil double from an alternate universe is take away his pants. That that is all his evil double can think to do to Cam makes it even better.

Fic - Iron Man/Classic Avengers - That One Man, Scorned and Covered with Scars [slash]

Title: That One Man, Scorned and Covered with Scars [slash]
Author: [info]muccamukk
Fandom: Iron Man/Classic Avengers (comics)
Spoilers/Warnings: Spoilers for various and sundry Pre-Civil War Iron Man plots. NC-17 for sex (some of it rough) and profanity. A rather loose interpretation of quite a bit of canon.
Number of Words: 3,960
Notes: Written for an [info]iron_kink prompt about Tony's scars (which I took a Pirate Code approach to). This kind of turned into a monster on me. It also ties into two previous stories, and I've put links to them where they fit in the continuity (it can be read on its own just as well, if you like). Title lifted from "The Impossible Dream" from Man of La Mancha. Thank you to the ever patient [info]culurien for the speedy beta.

In Which I Procrastinate by Talking About Comics

I just watched that animated movie The Next Avengers about all the Avenger sproglets plus Tony Stark fighting evil in the future.

What they say is true: Tony/Angst really is Marvel's OTP these days, I mean wow. (Spoilers) )

I was also looking at the previews for this next week in Marvel comics, and I got a little more pissy at them then I ever have previously. I mean, come on, guys... (Spoilers for previews of The Might Avengers, Sword of the Braddocks, plus the content of this month's Dark Avengers) )

Totally picking up Captain America and New Avengers though. I gave up on Invincible Iron Man a couple of months back because the writer kept contradicting his own bloody characterisation and trying to lead his readers around by the nose.

20184 / 20000

The other day, I made a list of all the plot elements I'd included so far and all the ones I still needed to wrap up. I had eight on both side of the line. I suspect this is going to be more like NaNo length by the time it's done.

Also, my guys are refusing to slash. I suspect I'm going to have to go back and weave some sort of romantic element in, which is no doubt going to come off as my slash is pastded on yay! Whatever.

Everyone at [info]capiron_bigbang is posting drabble excerpts of their stories, mine is here.
